Yeah, I think what I found so charming right off the bat in Wolf Hall was the way our protagonist is characterized by the way the Cardinal he works for teases him. Like we hear the Cardinal talking to merchants about "oh yes, Thomas, he causes a lot of property damage, he's cost me a fortune. Oh, and the constant stream of brokenhearted girls he leaves in his wake!" And the merchant looks over at Thomas and is like, "him?"
I think it would be so easy for this highly pragmatic, undramatic, sensible character to be boring, but he never is, and I love to see how that's done.
